Well...it's a really broad question but you just kind of have to go by the characteristics of a species in order to classify them into the best phylum. Like for example...if a species has bilateral symmetry you know for a fact it cannot belong to the phylum porifera because species in porifera have asymmetrical symmetry. It's all about the characteristics of the species that allow to to classify a species into a phylum.
