also ive been having a super hard time with this blog and getting posts up. i know im missing a muddiest point somewhere so i thought id try to make it up with some of my cool plant facts!!

Class Reflection

Today in class, we talked a lot about half lifes.

That's the time period it takes a certain type of substance to decay and decrease by half.

To help tie the lesson in with a lab we used M&Ms as an example. Starting with 100 separate pieces we put them in a cup and shook them for ten seconds, then pour them onto a plate and remove all the ones with the labeled side 'm' up. we kept doing that for ten seconds 6 times collecting the data on a chart. Then in the packet we filled out all the questions and made a line graph on our data.

of course after we were done with the lab we got to eat the M&Ms!!

**dont forget to finish up pages 31 and 32 in the packet for homework!!**

Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle cell disease is a mutation in the blood protein. It changes the shape of the red blood cells and changes their functions and behavior. These cells become sticky, stiff, and sickled and they can cause severe pain and extreme organ damage. This disease is inherited through genes of the parents, averaging a 25% chance per child, or a 1 in 4 chance. The disease is mostly found where mosquito born milaria is present, therefor it is the most common single cell disorder among African Americans and 1 in every 375 inherit this disease. All around the world 250,000 people on average are born with sickle cell disease each year. It is most commonly found in Africa, the Mediteranean, Arabia, and South Asia. Test for diagnosis are performed at birth called hemoglobin electrophoresis where the blood is sampled. Sickle cell disease can also be detected in an unborn fetus. The most obvious symptom is pain, which is associated with blocked blood vessels which can be severe enough for hospitalization. It can damage the spleen, lungs, and heart as well as strokes. Many cases develop anemia which leads to fatigue. There are 3 distinct types of the disease which include sickle cell anemia, SC disease, and SB disease. People with the disease have a shortened life expectancy with studies showing and average of 42 for males and 48 for females. Blood transfusions help lessen the symptoms as well as narcotics used to help lower the amount of pain. The drug hydroxyurea help prevent sickle cell's complications. The only known cure for the sickle cell disease is a bone marrow transplant but is a very high risk operation. It is more successful for kids while most adults have a tendency to reject the transplant.

Lego DNA

Hi everyone its Eleni! Today (Monday) in class we did a lab where we built DNA models using different color lego like pieces. The packet held the instructions to building the rungs and where to put the rods and hydrogen bonds. The cytosine (blue) connected to the guanine (yellow) and the adenine (orange) connected to the thymine (green). It was a nine rung ladder and the nitrogen bases were held together with a white hydrogen bond. The black deoxyribose sugar held together the base and the phosphate. We then took off the left half of the model and rebuilt the right side making a whole nother DNA structure. I did take pictures in class with my phone but as I've mentioned in past posts I am not good with computers so I'm not going to take the risk plugging my phone into the computer! But everyone was in class and hopefully can remember what it looks like! that really all we did in class today so everyone...STUDY!!

Also everyone pleaseeeee request a letter from Mrs. Stein to give the children a christmas present!! Pair up with a friend and help donate!!

hiii its eleni and so far im really confused with all the different phases. i get that there is a bunch of different ones during mitosis but then there others outside of mitosis and i don't get what all those ones are/do. i know this is kinda general but if you can help me that'd be great!!!

holaa its eleni and so far my muddiest point would have to be reading from the bio text book and understanding what i read. i know its not exactly a topic but if i was able to get what i read then i would have an easier time in the class. after each chapter its like i was reading another language! any study tips??

september 6 class reflection

hey its eleni and todays class besides going over homework for tonight at the beginning of the class, we went outside!! we went to the little collage of plants right behind the window of the room and recorded what consumers and producers we could see and an estimate of how many of each one there were. all the nature things (plants) were producers and anything living and moving (insect or animal) was a consumer. after that we went back to the classroom and shared everything we found with the rest of the class. i did take pictures from the garden thing but im not techy and i really dont want to mess up my phone trying to get them on my comp (SORRY!!)but basically it was just some pictures of the burdock plant :) and ill pass next class reflection on tooooo... Allie!

Unit 1 Reflection

hellooo its eleni, ok so unit one didnt seem chalenging at all i felt like i did pretty well with everything in class, but my test answers didnt totally agree sooo I GOTTA WORK ON MY STUDY HABBITS!! I really enjoy class cuz we are constantly up out of our seats and cunducting different labs and they are all so different it makes you look forward to bio! i think it was an ok first unit over all i just need to study more and be sure to memorize the material.

Okay seriously every time i try to post this it freezes then crashes! I wanna say im POed but im not sure if thats allowed...good thing i took some pics before i lost it! Okay starting over now: hey its eleni, i know im alittle late with this but i finally figured it out (technoolgy really isnt my thing) Okay well something interesting about me is im a really bad cook. I cant cook for my life so i decided to take up cooking class here at school and so far ive only burnt two bags of popcorn...its not like i try to mess it up i guess it just comes naturally. This year im excited to meet new people bacuse im super social. oooo and thats another intersting thing about me!! You can put me in just about any situation and ill find someone or something to talk about. Okay and something im not so excited about is all the homework. Sorry this was really badly organized. Now that i figured out the whole blog thing im going to try posting for the hundreth time, finger crossed it goes throughhhh..
