Also what does pure breeding and hybrid mean in genetics???

Tay-Sachs Disease

Hi guys! Heidi here.

My genetic disorder was Tay-Sachs disease. Tay-Sachs disease is a disease of the nervous system passed down through people who are from the Ashkenazi Jewish population. Tay-Sachs disease is caused by a defective gene on chromosome 15.

Some symptoms are:

• deafness
• blindness
• loss of muscle strength
• delayed mental and social skills
• loss of brain function
• increased startled reaction
• irritability
• loss of motor skills
• loss of muscle function
• seizures
• slow growth

You can get tested for Tay-Sachs disease before the child is born by a physical examination.

If the child had a seizure of an unknown cause or if they were different from other seizures, if the child had difficulty breathing, or if the seizure lasts longer than 2-3 minutes, the child might have Tay-Sachs disease. There are no existing treatment for Tay-Sachs disease.
Although there aren't any existing treatment all you can do is make the child comfortable. 1 in every 27 members of the Ashkenazi Jewish population are carriers. Most people who have this disease usually die at age 4 or 5, their symptoms are shown when they are 3-6 months old.

DNA Replication

Hey guys! Heidi here.

Okay, so today in class we talked about DNA REPLICATION.

We learned:
-Genes- are a segment of DNA which codes for a protein (traits)
-where DNA replication happens and when it happens
-what each strand stands serves as
-Histones- proteins which DNA is wrapped around

After our wonderful, yet confusing conversation, of DNA REPLICATION we had been given time to do our homework. We also got to have a one on one conversation w/ Mrs. Stein about DNA REPLICATION, because some of us had difficulty understanding the material. So I found a video that I thought MIGHT help.

What I'm confused about is all the DEFINITIONS and what they DO. For example like what is BACTERIOPHAGE?? and PROPHAGE?? I'm always LOST when in class Mrs. Stein talks about this. Other things I get confused on are BINARY FISSION, PHAGOCYTE, ACTIVE/PASSIVE IMMUNITY, MACROPHAGE, and lastly HISTAMINES... I KNOW its a lot that I'm confused on but at least one thing being defined would be nice! THANKs!

p.s. Sorry I couldn't make it as beautiful and colorful as I wanted it, so that whoever reads it would be entertained as well. :) Somethings messed up with the program..... I guess. :(

So, today we had a little activity that had to do w/MITOSIS, which is the division of cells, were we had little cut out squares of the steps in MITOSIS, and had to put it in order from the 1st step of MITOSIS to the last.

Unit 1 Reflection!

It's me, Heidi!!! I KNOW it's REALY REALY late to post my unit one reflection! Hope I still get a tiny bit of credit. :/ Unit one was deffinatly fun! Working with jumping beans and microscopes OH! and tetrahymena was VERY interesting! I wonder what the "beans" are going to turn into, because I remember Mrs. Stein saying that they grow into moths or some kind of insect!!! That would be SO cool to see!!! Don't you guys think so too? I sure do! I never know how to end these posts besides saying........bye. So.....BYE!!!!

First Post (kind of)

Guess who??? Heidi!!!! Anyway this is not realy my first post, my first post was the muddiest point one! :0 I know, I procrastinate ALOT!!! Which is NOT a good thing!! I wonder if I still get credit.....hmm. I HOPE I DO!!!! If not thats okay, I guess. :( Posting on the blog is SO much fun!!! :) I could not figgure out how to log on and once I did procrastinate and hold off on posting blogs.
