Hemophillia

Hey guys it's Mike here and my genetic disorder is Hemophilia. Hemophilia is a genetic disorder in which the body is not able to clot blood when you have an open wound. It is always inherited by family by passing the gene down from generation to generation. The gene
tic cause of Hemophilia is lack of the
factor(Gene)
VIII or IX. This is the gene that produces coagulation cascades which play a major role in clotting blood. Hemophilia is located on the X chromosome. This is why it is so much more common in males than in women.
The main symptom of Hemophilia is bleeding excessively. In some severe or mild cases of the disorder internal bleeding can happen anywhere in the body, and bleeding in the joints is very common. Overall the main symptom of Hemophilia is abnormal bleeding.
Someone is diagnosed with Hemophilia when they have an abnormal bleeding episode, or there is a known family history of the disorder. It can be detected on a minor cut very early in life, or in some cases it can go undetected until later in life until they have surgery and there is excessive bleeding.
The most common treatment for Hemophilia is intravenous infusions. This is when a doctor goes into one of the patients veins and replaces the missing clotting factor (Coagulation Cascades). Another treatment is Xyntha. This medicine contains the gene VIII to help create clots. The last therapy is the most basic, and that is to keep cuts from happening.
The prevalence of Hemophilia is very rare. Only about 100,000 males are affected every year. A study covering 106 countries shows that Hemophilia is very varied and diffused everywhere. The only group that it is concentrated on is males because their one X chromosome. The life expectancy for the disorder in 1999 was 63 years for severe cases, and in moderate cases 75 years.

Thursdays class

Hey its Mike and on Thursday we talked about DNA. DNA was a very hard topic and was very complex. So i am going to try to explain to you the structure of DNA. DNA is made up of nucleotides joined into long strands or chains by covalent bonds. As you can see on the right diagram DNA has nitrogen bases these are simply bases that contain nitrogen. DNA has four kinds of nitrogen bases these are adenine, guanine, cytosine, thymine. These are joined together by a covalent bond. That is the structure of DNA and it contains our genes and contains instructions to make proteins so it is very important in our lives.

class today

Hey its mike here and we had a very interesting class today. In the first part of class we just reveiwedthe organelles in a cell. Then class really got interesting when we went into a very complicated and hard process in which biochemical energy is made . The process turns glucose into ATP in the mitochondria. The glucose goes through many processes as you can see in the chart like first the krebs cycle which produces a little ATP and then the electron transport which produces a lot of ATP and energy for the cell to use. After this process to release energy the cell breaks the chemical bond of the second and third phosphates in ATP. This breaking of these chemical bonds creates a lot of energy and helps the cell do its job. well that is what we learned today in class bye.

Comment to: Mike H

Sorry Mike H I can't comment on your post, because...I don't know how to...
So here's my advice about your problem. (The first image is a better example!)

Well, do you know that:
1st trophic level is producer
2nd is primary consumer (Herbivores)
3rd is secondary consumer. (Consumers)
Remember that producers are autotrophs that makes their own food; i.e. plants, bacteria's.
And consumers are heterotrophs which cannot make its own food, so they rely on producers or other consumers; i.e. animals, humans.

muddiest point

the thing that i struggled most on in this chapter is the trophic levels and how to read the charts. it was very hard to get the fact that one organism can be on two levels at the same time. it just did not make sense. that is my muddiest point
