so today in class...

• Mrs. Stein stamped our homework homework from last night which was UP 79&80.
• then we talked about the PLANT OF THE DAY which was living stones which are plants that look like rocks so that other animals won't eat them
• we also answered the question on page 61 in the unit packet which was about energy
• later we reviewed the functions of the structures in leaves:

1. upper & lower epidermis- protect everything inside the leaf and prevent tearing
2. cuticle (cutin)- prevents water loss
3. spongy mesophyll/palisade mesophyll- photosynthesis
4. stomate- gas exchange (takes carbon dioxide in, releases oxygen) & releases water (transpiration)
5. vascular tissues (vein)- tranportation

My muddiest point for this unit is what happens in the stages of development and pregnancy

Patau Syndrome

Patau syndrome, also called Trisomy 13, is a disorder where a person has 3 copies of chromosome 13. It is caused by nondisjunction, which is the failure of 2 chromosomes to separate during the formation of either egg or sperm. Symptoms of Patau syndrome include extreme mental retardation, extra toes or fingers, seizures, heart defects, and small eyes, head, and lower jaw. Patau syndrome can be detected before the birth of an infant, but if it is not, it can be discovered by looking at the infant’s karyotype.

Due to the fact that many Trisomy 13 related deaths are caused by heart defects, surgery can help increase the survival rate. Speech, physical, and occupational therapy can also help people who suffer from Trisomy 13 develop to their full potential. Although race and gender do not increase or decrease the chances of dying from Patau syndrome, 91% of infants die within the first year of life. Although there are some children with the disorder that have lived past the age of 10 years old, it is not very common, because of this, the disorder is not as present in society as other disorders.

PROTEIN SYNTHESIS

hey guys!! its kelly

so we started off todays class by going over last nights homework which was the double bubble map and then we started talking about PROTEIN SYNTHESIS which is the process in which proteins are made

PROTEIN SYNTHESIS has two parts: TRANSCRIPTION and TRANSLATION

TRANSCRIPTION is when DNA is used as a template to make messenger RNA & it takes place in the NUCLEUS

TRANSLATION is when the messenger RNA is used to make PROTEINS in the RIBOSOMES

*Mrs. Stein also said that we should know that DNA is transcribed to RNA & RNA is translated to PROTEINS*

so my muddiest point from the unit was knowing the difference between the rough & smooth ER & what their functions are

OSMOSIS

Hey guys its kelly

so today in class we reviewed the plasmolyzed cells lab & the enzyme lab

we also talked about OSMOSIS which is the process in which water DIFFUSES through a semi permeable membrane & how things go from high to low

then we went to the library to take surveys for our risks at getting certain types of cancer(which we had to finish for homework)
