Hey! It's Kara S. Today we briefly went over characteristics of invertebrates, because after today Mrs.Stein is sooooo done with them! We completed quite a pleasant lab, observing the comparisons between crayfish, spiders,and grasshoppers. We have our Unit exam on Thursday I believe! That's All!

Wilson's Disease , Kara S

Hey! So the disease that I was assigned was Wilson's disease. This disease is where there is too much copper found in the body's tissue. You can't catch this disease, it is inherited. It is autosomal recessive (not on the x chromosome.) Wilson's disease is most common in eastern Europeans, Sicilians, and southern Itialians. When too much copper is in the body, it is stored in the liver, brian, kidneys, and the cornells of the eyes. The copper damages these tissues, and causes them to function improperly. Sympotms include weakness, slow movements, confusion, and uncontrollable movements. Long term affects are severe disabilities. Signs are a damaged nervous system, resulting in confusion and loss of cordination. If the disease spreads to your eyes, signs include limited movements of the eye.

The first step in recovery is to reduce the amount of copper in your tissues. Then it is to change your diet to a low copper diet. This means reducing the intake of choocolate, or any other high copper foods. Then the last step is to treat any nercous system or liver damage. Medication is used to get copper to bind to kidneys, and washed out of the body. The two medicines used are called D- penicillamine and Trientine. Wilson's disease is diangosed through lab tests and physical exams. It's prevalance in society is very rare. One is 30,000 people are diagnosed with Wilson's diesease according to the America Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology.

Today we had a substitute because Mrs. Stein wasn't here. :( We sat at new seats and took a quiz about Meiosis. After, we went over the quiz. Then we read over UP 21. She gave us a mini reading quiz to go over what we had learned. Once we went over the reading quiz she gave us a handout and we worked on UP 29-31. This is what happened today!

Hey! It's Kara S! So my muddiest point is an antigen the same thing as a pathogen? or does a pathogen turn into an antigen?

Here's what went down today!

Here's what went down today in Mrs. Stein's 8th period bio class! We took notes on 10.3 which was all about regulating cell cycles. We learned that cyclins were the proteins that regulated the cycle. During interphase, they signal spindle information. How exciting! 2 types of regulators are INTERNAL REGULATORS and EXTERNAL REGULATORS. Internal regulators check the cell and make sure the cell is ready for mitosis. It's giving it approval, like the "Go ahead!" External regulators speed and slow down cell division.

We learned that the causes of cancer are:

*Carcinogens (cancer-causing chemicals)

*Mutants ( DNA overproduce growth factors)

*Some viruses (they mess with your DNA)

After we took these fantastic notes, we got in our lab groups and make sure our big bird stamp sheets were finished. Then the bell rang!

• What phase does the chromosomes condense into chromatin?
• and when we look at the mitosis diagrams, are we looking at the WHOLE cell, or a zoomed in form of the NUCLEUS?

Reflections on Unit 1!

Hey, Wow! Yeah I'm going to have to agree that this unit flew by! It was very fasted paced and time effiecient. I enjoyed the jumping bean lab. I learned a lot from it. I liked how most of us didn't know what the organism was, so we really had to observe and make inferences on those observations like real scientists! In all honesty, that Tetrahymena lab caught me off guard. I was confused from the beginning, and nothing made sense from there on. But now that I have that experience, I know how fast the class moves and how to stay on top of things. This unit was very interesting though. We also learned how to identify living organisms from non-living organsims. Overall, this was a great unit!

Hey, It's Kara! Okaayyyy, something interesting about me is that I'm a freak with memorizing and reciting numbers. I can say 80 numbers of Pi in about 15 or something seconds(someone will have to time me :p) ...but I still am horrible at math haha. I'm looking forward to all the Friday night lights and big events at GBS. Im not to thrilled about the homework though! Yeah that's about it! :)
