Hey guys!

SO, yesterday we learned about the SPIDER PLANT. Pretty much looks like a normal green plant, but with little spidery-looking things at the end of the leaf. After that, we review a tiny bit before our photosynthesis and leaf quiz! yay. quizzes. Once we finished that up, we started a lab that dealt with the investigation of plants! Some things like tropisms and monocots and dicots, which we will continue to do on Wednesday and thursday. So yeah thats pretty much it, peace out. Have a lovely rest of the week everyone! :)

Hey guys!! Sooooo, today we started off class going over some homework. We went over and reviewed the menstrual cycle. Something that helped me remember how it worked was the little chart thing Mrs. Stein wrote on the board that kinda went like this. HYPOTHALAMUS -> PITUITARY GLAND -> FSH & LH -> OVARY -> ESTROGEN & PROGESTERONE. ( LH and progesterone are linked. Whereas FSH and estrogen are linked.) Then the second half of class we took some notes on the idea of contraception, fertilization and implantation. Pretty much the main idea of contraception is to keep it safe when you have sex. But the safest plan is to practice abstinence so there is no possible way to have a baby. Then fertilization and implantation was pretty much just that the fertilization occurs in the oviduct and that there are some cell divisions that we should know about like, the embryo, the morula, and the blastocyst. So yeah, that what went down. Then we went home. :)

BETA THALASSEMIA!!

Beta thalassemia is a blood disorder that reduces the production of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the iron-containing protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to cells throughout of the body. In people with beta thalassemia, low levels of hemoglobin lead to the lack of oxygen in many parts of the body. Affected individuals also have a shortage of red blood cells, which can cause pale skin, weakness, fatigue, and more seriosoud, complications. People with beta thalassemia are at an increased risk of developing abnormal blood clots. Beta thalassamia is classified into tw o types depending on the severity of symptoms: thalassemia minor and thalassemia major. Of these two types, beta thalassemia major is much more severe. The signs and symptoms of thalassemia major appear within the first 2 years of life. Children develop life-threating aneamia. They dont gain weight and grow at the expected rate, and may devlop yellowing of the skin and whiting of the eyes. For children with thalassemia minor, the symptoms may appear in early childhood or alittle later in life. Affected people have mild to moderate anemia and may also have slo growth and bone abnormalities. Beta thalassemia is a fairly common blood disorder worldwide. Thousands of infants with beta thalassemia are born each year. Beta thalassemia occurs most frequently in people from Mediterranean countries.

The first and last...Monday, October 24th of 2011!

Alright soooo todayy we startedd of class by takingg a quiz on 10.1! (eww) Then went on to talking about Epidemiologist which is a person who studies infectious diseases. After that we watched a short five minute clip about how a pump caused a Cholera outbreak. Then we finished of class with a fun lab that helped us "investigate" who was the carrier and who caused the sickness at the wonderful school of Glenbrook SOUUTHHH! Alright ya'll have a good night! Unit 1!

Hey guys, it Erika!! Alright so I thought unit 1 was really interesting! The only reason I knew what the jumping beans were, because they had them in a little shop in Lake Geneva that I went to about 2 weeks before school! Weird. But their pretty awesome! No offense but learning about the microscope was a litte boring, but that's okay :) because everything else was really fun! The Tetrahymena lab was super cool, and I loved it. Seeing the cells up so close, was amazing! Can't wait to start Unit 2.

What's up guys, its Erika!! Alright, so something interesting about me is that I love literally any kind of music except screamo and classical! My iTunes has everything from like hard core rap to country songs that are about riding a tracker! Haha! Music is my life, I don't know what I would do without it! Something that I'm excited about this year is definitely meeting new people, and just having a lot of fun at South! Something that I am the least excited about is getting a lot of homework (which I'm sure everyone else is like that too). Well yeah, this class is going to be pretty awesome!! :)
