New Tables!!!!!

First day back from the long weekend, its a Monday. first thing i see when i walk into my first period bio class, BOOM! new tables. these tables allow us to ask for help from our peers sitting next to us and give me more room to put my junk on t he desk. after i got over the fact that these new table, alt though a little to short for my liking, are awesome, we learned about taxonomy. when i first heard this word the first this i thought of was animals that are stuffed so they can be kept in some room. i quickly learned that this is the exact opposite. taxonomy is the study of classifying animals we learned about the different classifications of animals and which level is which in the study of taxonomy. this carried over into the next day. we continued our notes on taxonomy and did some hands on things with this by classifying different types of aliens. we then were assigned the task of using a chart to find out what species sharks where based on their physical appearance . this was actually an interesting assignment being able to use one chart to find out their species of many different animals.o ya, last but not least we learned about some strange animals over the past two days. we learned about a slime eel that has survived based on the fact that it uses its slime to get away and the star nose mole that to only is the worlds fastest eater but the fact that is relies on is amazing nose to find food. so aside from the fact we have these new awesome tables we learned some pretty interesting stuff too.

reflections on first unit

Okay, so I thought the 1st Unit was very intriguing and fun. I enjoyed observing the jumping beans. I found it very interesting when my group experimented temperature with the jumping beans, and found out that heat increases the number of jumps. The experiment and the whole unit helped me learn about the jumping beans.

Unit 1 Reflection

Hi its Jessie. In unit one, our class learned how to use microscopes and about the scientific method. We also counted vacuoles in Tetrahymena thermophila and experimented on the effect temperature has on jumping beans.

Im so happy we got to use microscopes in biology this unit. I really like using them and benefited from learning how to correctly operate them. Also, looking at the Tetrahymena thermophila under them was so awesome!

We learned about independent variables, dependent variables, controlled variables, control group, qualitative variables, quantitative variables and making observations and inferences. We even learned how to organize an experiment! Using a hot plate with warm water on it and a bowl of ice water, my group found how temperature effects the movement of jumping beans. Overall, I learned a lot this unit and I am looking forward to the next one!

Unit 1 Reflection...

Anka here! Time flew in Unit 1! Maybe that's because it was actually pretty fun! I've never been so hands on in a science class before. The beans were probably the highlight of the unit! They were so cool and fun to learn about. I still can't believe there's something living inside there! Using the microscopes to see the tetrahymena thermophila was also really awesome. Although, I learned all about microscopes last year, I completely forgot everything! Now it has been implanted in my brain to never to use the coarse adjustment knob when on high power! (Not that I did or anything! xD) Not only has my brain been refreshed on micrscopes but also on how to form an experiment. I can totally call myself an expert now...okay, maybe not an expert...haha. After learning everything we needed to know for the quiz, I was well prepared and able to do well on it. Overall, unit 1 was surprisingly intersting and I'm really excited to continue doing more experiments! (:

Nature of Science - DONE!!

Yay we made it through the first unit! I thought 9th grade science would blow me off and overwhelm me, but our first unit was exciting and enjoyable. On the first couple days of school, to be honest, my brain was filled with worries about grades, teachers and homework. I was so anxious and nervous about this school year.
When we were introduced to jumping beans, I had no clue what they were, and I had no idea they were larvae's inside a seed pod, but it was fun observing and experimenting with these creatures.
Learning about all the microscope functions were boring, but I realized if we didn't go over those things, observing the cells would have failed, because we would've been lost to do what's next or how to control the microscope. Overall, it was a fun unit to start off biology and it wasn't that overwhelming as I thought it would be.
